Previewing Everquest Landmark Alpha

EQ Landmark Alpha

I bought into the Everquest Landmark (EQL) Alpha hype on Saturday thinking i could realise some grand plans to rebuild a city or some monstrous construct according to previews and the development team's tutorials.

After playing the game for the last two days I am really struggling to enjoy the Alpha build. It's just so frustratingly slow to mine resources required to meet the crafting demands of this game. I don't think anyone will be realising any grand projects or schemes for a long time in its current state.

Is the alpha version of Everquest Landmark worth playing right now? My answer is No. Wait for the game to go in to beta. Or if you're a cheap bastard, wait for it to release when it is free to play!

Note: My preview is based on an alpha build of the EQL. Non-Disclosure Agreement for EQL was lifted on 1 February 2014 by Sony Online Entertainment. Please bare in mind that the game is not complete so in no way should you take my comments and criticisms as the state of the game at release. The alpha build previewed is as of the date of this article.

'Bare bones' alpha build as of February 2014.

The alpha build in its current state is nothing more than a glorified mining simulator. It's not even a good simulator with all the bugs and issues with the camera conflicting with the terrain in tight spaces. I dont feel like I'm really having much impact on the terrain. In the grand scheme of things i feel like a small rabbit digging holes in the ground. My only objective right now is to improve my pickaxe in order to access better metals and minerals, but that task has taken me most of the weekend by itself. I haven't even been able to claim a plot of land because every island has been claimed!

After 4 hours on Sunday and 3 hours today I've had enough of the mining simulator. It's bloody boring in its current state. I can't see myself wasting another weekend mining for resources to build a mud flat.

The crafting recipes have crazy resource demands to create even the most basic tools in the game. 2 hours of foraging for a pickaxe? Then 3 more hours of mining for a basic crafting station?

I just don't have time for this as I have better games to play and work to do. If I want to get my building simulator fix, i might as well play Minecraft or use CryEngine SDK.

Thus EQL has been rather disappointing and I wont be coming back at least until the beta next month. Maybe they'll make it a lot more accessible by then. My recommendation for anyone reading this is to wait. Wait for the game to go live - because it'll be free to play, and maybe it won't be so fracking boring!

At night you can see any ores clearly by their reflections.

Most of the claims i've seen so far are holes in the ground. This is a big hole!

Someone's building a floating structure on top of that mountain.

The map is broken: I can't really use this for prospecting or navigation.

And the lowest possible graphic setting: everything looks like mud.
